Indian Trail was once a Native American territory. The town earned its name from a 17th-century trading route connecting the Waxhaw Indian settlement to Petersburg, Va. Early settlers were Scottish and German recipients of 18th-century land grants. The community was little more than a post office until the early 20th century, when small retail and entertainment establishments began to appear. The population, at that time about 300, consisted primarily of farmers. Hit hard by the Great Depression, Indian Trail didn’t experience much in the way of population growth until the 1960s.
